Team Cheer

Purpose

  • To have fun.

  • To become comfortable with the other members within the group.

  • To form a sense of group identity and belonging.

  • Time

  • 5-10 minutes initially to create the cheer and share it with the class.

  • After that, just long enough to let out that cheer!

  • Grouping

  • Small group activity - table groups or cooperative learning groups are perfect for this activity.

  • Materials

  • None

  • Goal

  • To create a group cheer to be used whenever the group has something to celebrate.

  • Directions

  • At your signal, have each group get together and create a celebration yell or cheer.

  • It can be a classic “GO TEAM!” accompanied by “high fives” all around or a “YES!!!” accompanied by drawing down your bent elbow and raising your knee, or it can be something special and unique based on the interests and enthusiasm of the group! Songs, cheers, pantomime, faces, and more are all ok when creating a group cheer.

  • Once each group is comfortable with their cheer, have them show it off for the rest of the class.

  • Now, remind the group that each time you say the word “CELEBRATE,” everyone must stop what they are doing, meet their group, and perform their cheer. It doesn’t matter where they are or what they are doing, the entire class must stop and perform their cheer.

  • You will have to set the parameters of the celebration. You’ll have to decide if only the teacher can cause a celebration or if individual students can cause a celebration.

  • It is not unusual for students to want to celebrate a number of times when the activity is still novel. Once the novelty wears off, students generally use the celebration to truly celebrate successes within the classroom.

  • Each celebration should be fun and leave the entire class energized!!
