Purpose

  • To get students up and moving.

  • To rejuvenate students so they are ready to work and focus.

  • Time

  • 5-10 minutes depending on the size of the small groups. The time needed to complete this activity will diminish as students become familiar with how the activity works.

  • Groupings

  • Small groups of 3-5 students; table groups or cooperative learning groups are perfect for this activity.

  • Materials

  • CD or cassette player

  • Lively music

  • Goal

  • To have each student lead their group in a quick series of movements to help students re-energize and re-focus their bodies and brains.

  • Directions

  • Have students identify the number of syllables in their first name. Have them raise their hand, holding up their fingers to show you the number of syllables in their name. This is a quick way to make sure they understand and to keep them focused.

  • Tell students that they need to think of a movement for each syllable in their first name.

  • Jen-ni-fer = 3 movements

  • Joe = 1 movement
  • Then, tell students that at your signal they are going to stand and teach the members of their group their movements. Group members will do the movements along with the leader.

  • Give students one or two minutes to decide which movements they want to lead.

  • Assure the group it is ok if their movement routine has some of the same movements as other members of their group.

  • When each student knows what movements they are going to teach to their group, put the music on and signal the students to begin. Students will teach their group their movements and members of the group will do the movements along with the leader. Go around the circle two or three times with everyone participating by doing everyone's movements.

  • Variations

  • Make students responsible for the same number of movements as there are:
  • Letters in their first name

  • Letters in their first and last names

  • Syllables in their last name

  • Syllables in their first and last names

  • Vowels in their first name

  • Consonants in their first name

  • Vowels in their first and last name
